Build and Review a Beam Case

Define a determinate beam, place supports and loads carefully, then use reactions, diagrams, and calculation steps to check the model.

A correct diagram begins with a correct structural model. CourseLab Beam can calculate the case you enter, but it cannot decide whether the support arrangement, load direction, or units match the problem you intended.

1. Define the beam and supports

Set the span and choose the support condition that matches the exercise. Confirm distances and units before adding loads.

2. Add the loading

Place point loads, distributed loads, and applied moments at the intended positions. Check sign and direction as each item is added.

  • Use exact positions rather than estimating visually.
  • Confirm the loaded length of distributed loads.
  • Keep the unit system consistent throughout the case.

3. Review the support reactions

Check that the reactions are plausible and that vertical equilibrium is satisfied. Unexpected reaction signs often reveal a mistaken load direction or support setup.

4. Read the shear and moment diagrams

Follow the diagrams from left to right and relate changes to the applied loading. Use cursor values and calculation steps to inspect important locations rather than relying only on the overall shape.

5. Change one thing at a time

Duplicate or revise the case methodically when studying load effects. Changing one load, dimension, or support condition at a time makes comparisons much easier to interpret.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing units within one model.
  • Placing a load at the wrong coordinate.
  • Using the wrong support condition.
  • Treating an educational calculation as a sealed professional design.
